コンセプト
現代のインドを象徴するモダンな空間でインド料理を提供する、というコンセプトからDiyaは生まれました。店名であるDiyaとは、インドの家庭で毎日使用される葉の形をした伝統的なオイルランプのことです。暗闇に灯りをもたらすという行為を象徴する神聖な儀式であります。有名なインドのアーティストSubodh氏がデザインを手掛けたDiyaのロゴには、この灯りが揺らめく炎として表されています。このテーマに忠実であるため、お料理を提供するボウルはDiyaの形に特別注文で作って頂きました。壁に飾られているのはベンガルのコンテポラリー・アーティストの作品で、くつろげる居心地の良い雰囲気を演出してくれます。そしてコルカタにあるコロニアル建築をチャコールエッチングした壁は、イギリス領インド帝国をよみがえらせてくれます。お客様はお食事を目的にいらっしゃいますが、その雰囲気をきっともっと楽しみたくなり、ゆっくりと時間を過ごすことでしょう。
東京で初のモダンなインディアン・レストランをオープンすること望んでいた創立者のVivek Kothari氏。彼のビジョンそのものがDiyaであります。Kothari氏は60年以上もの間インドでレストランやサービス業を営んできた家族の影響を受けて育ちました。少年期を過ごしたコルカタは、イギリス領インド帝国時代にインドの首都だったこともあり正にインド中のあらゆる味のるつぼであり、コルカタと東京にあるKothari氏のレストランを特徴づけるものでもあります。
Concept
Diya was born out of the concept of trying to introduce Indian Cuisine in a modern and contemporary ambience which reflects the India of today. The name Diya means a traditional oil lamp shaped like a leaf that is lit in Indian houses everyday. It is a sacred ritual that is symbolic of bringing light to darkness. This light is reflected in the flickering flame of the Diya logo designed by the famous Indian artist Subodh. In keeping with the theme the serving bowls have been specially order made in the shape of a Diya. The art on the walls is by contemporary Bengali artists creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The charcoal etchings of the colonial buildings in Kolkata on the walls bring alive the British Raj. You will come for the food but you will certainly stay on for the ambience.
Diya was created by Vivek Kothari and embodies his vision of opening the first modern Indian dining restaurant in Tokyo. Vivek’s influence comes from his family who have been in the restaurant and hospitality business for over 60 years in India. Kolkata, where Vivek Kothari spent his childhood years was the capital of India during the British Raj and therefore is a true melting pot of flavours from all over India which characterize his restaurants in Kolkata and Tokyo.
